Description:
Seven women and three children were displaced Tuesday after a fire damaged the home they shared in the 200 block of South Eighth Street in Santa Paula, officials said. No one was injured in the 422 p.m. blaze, but the two-story Victorian-style house suffered major fire damage and likely will have to be torn down, Ventura County Fire Department Engineer John Foy said. The women and children, including two infants, were put up in a local motel by the American Red Cross, said Dale Franz, a Red Cross emergency services manager. Some of the women were home when the fire started, but escaped without incident, officials said. “They got out with nothing,” Franz said. “We’re providing diapers and some clothing.” The fire is believed to have started in the kitchen before spreading to the second floor and attic, said Don Bartosh, a battalion chief with the city of Ventura Fire Department. Smoke poured out of the roof and scores of people in the densely populated neighborhood watched the afternoon blaze from the sidewalk. At one point, the roof began to collapse and the incident commander ordered all the firefighters out of the house, Bartosh said. Residents who lived next door also were evacuated as a precaution. The house was sprayed with fire-retardant foam after firefighters got the upper hand on the blaze, Foy said. “In an older house like this, once you get fire in the walls, you have to chase the thing all over the place,” Bartosh said. Eleven fire units, including engines and a ladder truck, responded from the Santa Paula, Ventura County, Ventura and Fillmore fire departments, Foy said. from ventura county star
